Sad news to report, there is a search and rescue underway for a missing boater. A fisherman who was fishing two miles west of Little Harbor in Ruskin with a woman and her son were aboard a 19-foot vessel when their anchor got stuck. The man jumped into the bay to retrieve the anchor but he never came back up. Many of our local emergency responders are on scene and searching for the fisherman. If you are out on the water keep a look out. The search should continue until sunset. Best case scenario is that the tide swept him away from the boat when he surfaced and he will be found safe.
Unfortunately situations like this can be avoided. An anchor is not something to risk your life for. Cut the line and find yourself a new one. The bay is full of structure and anchors get stuck all the time. If you continuously lose your anchor invest in an anchor ball and ring. It might not work all the time but its only about a $30 investment. Not only does it retrieve your anchor but it also saves your back.
